And as we mentioned in that last story, women from mainland China travelling to Hong Kong to give birth has become a hot-button issue. On Tuesday, the Sha Tin Magistrate Court sentenced a 29-year-old woman from mainland China named Xu Li for violating visa rules. Xu had been helping women from the mainland to give birth in Hong Kong. In 2011, four out of ten births in Hong Kong’s hospitals were from mainland Chinese mothers. It has put a strain on Hong Kong’s medical resources for local maternity services. Hong Kong authorities have said they will prosecute more of these maternity agent cases.
