Zhou Yongkang Next "Target" in Bo Xilai Saga: Report

Was China’s security chief Zhou Yongkang planning a conspiracy to overthrow Chinese leader-to-be Xi Jinping, and install disgraced Party official Bo Xilai in his place? That is what a new report is claiming.
Zhou Yongkang is a Politburo Standing Committee member, one of the nine men that rule the Chinese Communist Party. He is part of the hardline faction that includes Bo Xilai and former party leader Jiang Zemin. That faction is contending with current leader Hu Jintao’s faction for power.
Last night Boxun, an overseas Chinese citizen journalism website, released an article called:
“The big play of the Bo Xilai case is just starting: Zhou Yongkang has become the next target for removal.”
Now, Boxun sources a lot of information from anonymous users. But the site has been correct in predicting some events in the past, especially related to Bo Xilai’s downfall.
The article, citing someone “with knowledge of the situation,” talks about an alleged conspiracy between Zhou Yongkang and Bo Xilai to oust Xi Jinping. Xi is the man tipped to replace Hu Jintao as the next leader of the Communist Party.
Boxun said that Zhou helped Bo purchase advanced equipment from Germany, to allow Bo to listen in on meetings between top leaders. Zhou also allegedly met with Bo and Bo’s police chief Wang Lijun to plan the strategy.
But then on February 6th, Wang Lijun fled to the US consulate in Chengdu. This is the event that brought Bo into the spotlight and led to his removal for (quote) “serious discipline violations.”
According to Boxun, Zhou is still to trying to defend Bo Xilai and Wang Lijun. If Bo’s career is over, there will be no one to represent Jiang’s faction at the top of the new leadership when Zhou retires later this year.
Why should this matter?
Jiang Zemin launched a persecution campaign against the Falun Gong spiritual practice in 1999. The members of his faction have all carried out this persecution. A group that monitors the human rights situation in China says that Zhou has been directly responsible for human rights violations.

“For the past 12-years, the 610 office, which has been directed by Zhou Yongkang, has been responsible for all aspects of the persecution of Falun Gong, including the organ harvesting…the detention of hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners in jails and labor camps and the deaths of at least 3000 Falun Gong practitioners.”
Bo Xilai was also sued in several countries, including the US and Canada, for his role in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.
Now Bo’s removal may have serious consequences for Zhou. NTD Senior China Analyst Heng He says that Zhou and the hardline faction need a representative in the next group of leaders, or their actions may be exposed.
[Heng He, NTD Senior China Analyst]:
“Zhou Yongkang lost his card for the power struggle for the next generation of leaders, because Zhou Yongkang will automatically retire in November, after the Party’s National Congress, retire. His faction most needs, someone with the blood debt to carry his interest to persecute Falun Gong and to prevent him being investigated for his crime.”
The Boxun article alleged that Zhou Yongkang shed tears during a self-examination before Hu Jintao. If Zhou really is being targeted for removal, those tears may not be his last.
