There was an unusual sight over Beijing’s skyline last Thursday—a huge glowing mushroom cloud hung over the city around 7pm local time

No, an atomic bomb did not go off over Beijing, we think—but this ominous cloud formation certainly had people wondering what was going on.

State-run Xinhua News Agency published these pictures, with a description saying that the lightning strikes appeared to be ripping the sky open. Many people also posted their own photos and videos of the strange phenomenon.

The cloud spanned for several miles and lasted for an hour. Weather experts say the sight is nothing more than a cumulus cloud—that is a cloud formation that looks like the head of a cauliflower.
