About Hu Jia
Hu Jia has been an activist on behalf of Chinese AIDS victims since the year 2000. He was the founder of the Beijing Loving Source Information Center (北京爱源信息咨询中心), where he mainly focused on the plight of Chinese citizens who contracted AIDS through unsanitary conditions during government blood plasma collections. His organization was shut down in November 2010 because of pressure from authorities.
Hu Jia is also a senior member of the US-based June Fourth Heritage & Culture Association, which seeks redress for the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, and speaks out on behalf of current Chinese activists.
Despite being in and out of detention for his political activism, Hu Jia appears to remain undaunted in his work.
He was detained for questioning in mid-June 2012 after calling for an investigation into the suspicious death of former Tiananmen Square organizer Li Wangyang.
Hu Jia also played a role in blind activist Chen Guangcheng's escape from his home in Shandong to the US Embassy in April 2012, for which he was also questioned by police.
Hu Jia is married to Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕), a blogger and fellow rights activist.
