What's Behind China's Escalation of Island Disputes

The territorial disputes over the South China Sea are escalating, and the Chinese regime does not appear to be backing down. 
 
Beijing announced today a new government to administer a cluster of island as Sansha City.  Vietnam also claims sovereignty in the area. 
 
Last week, Chinese officials successfully prevented the meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations from creating a code of conduct for the dispute area. 
 
In East China Sea, China is also locked in competing claims over Diaoyu Island with Japan.
 
In this China Focus we look at what is driving the escalating tension – is it sovereignty concerns, control of natural resources or something more? And just how far are Chinese leaders willing to go for its territorial claims?
