On July 20th, 1999, 100 million people in China were suddenly labeled enemies of the state. A popular spiritual practice once promoted by the Chinese government became the subject of a nationwide persecution campaign.
After 13 years though, Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, has withstood the brutalities. It became the first group in China’s modern history to have born the full brunt of a Communist Party-led crackdown and actually turned the tables on the Chinese regime.
In this China Focus, we look back to when the Chinese Communist Party launched the persecution of Falun Gong, and how practitioners of this spiritual practice have been able to counter state-run propaganda and suppressive organs to peacefully resist the persecution.
