China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency called a speech of the US Secretary of State
“vicious,” “rude,” and a “cheap shot” at China.
Hilary Clinton spoke at a university in Senegal as part of her 11-day African tour. She did not mention China at all in her speech, but called on African leaders to embrace democracy and to work together with responsible foreign powers. Many saw this as a veiled swipe at the Chinese regime.
China has been accused of supporting its economic boom in part by dealing with countries with poor human rights records, high corruption, and labor abuses— especially in Africa and in the Middle East.
