An update on the trial of Gu Kailai who is charged with poisoning British businessman Neil Heywood.
Last Thursday, Gu, along with an accomplice, admitted killing Heywood back in November. And now the lawyer for the accomplice says a verdict may come out later this month, but it’s not certain.
Gu Kailai is the wife of ousted Chongqing Party boss Bo Xilai, who was probably slated to ascend to the Politburo Standing Committee next year. The Politburo Standing Committee is made of nine of the most powerful people in the Chinese Communist Party. Bo was stripped of his position and influence after his former right-hand man, police chief Wang Lijun, fled to a US Consulate in February.
Details about what he handed over to US officials are unclear, but some ramifications of his visit are already evident in the trial of Bo's wife. Gu and her accomplice Zhang Xiaojun could face the death penalty if they are found guilty.
