A proposed plan to teach Hong Kong kids about China is causing uproar. Hong Kong parents and education groups say the planned "National Education" course glorifies the Chinese Communist Party, while whitewashing its failures and amounts to “brainwashing” school students. To make their concerns heard, an estimated 30,000 to 90,000 Hong Kong residents marched against the proposed course.  Parents in particular want the Hong Kong government to scrap the course before school starts in September. In this China Focus we look at why the course sparked such strong reactions, and what this means for the Chinese regime’s efforts to bring Hong Kong closer within its control.
