Earthquake Rocks Melbourne and Surrounding Areas — 5.3 on Richter Scale
Melbourne, Australia was rocked tonight just before 9:00 pm local time by an earthquake of 5.3 on the Richter scale, lasting 20 seconds.
The quake was felt by millions within a radius of over 150 miles, with hundreds of reports coming in from many areas. So far, no damage has been reported.
Clare Barr is a resident of Morwell, approximately 11 miles east of the epicenter. She was watching television when the earthquake began.
[Clare Barr, Morwell Resident]:
“The whole house just started to shake. I thought there was a helicopter outside. The windows were shaking. Pretty much everything was shaking.”
Clare said her boyfriend, “thought it was a bomb.”
[Clare Barr, Morwell Resident]:
“I was very scared. Frantic. The TV was shaking. It was like a massive rumble.”
The Geoscience Australia website was inundated with web traffic and has crashed.
