Major Art Theft from Paris Museum
Five works of art with a combined value of around 100 million Euros have been stolen from the Modern Art Museum of Paris.
Paintings by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger and Georges Braque were taken in the heist.
The theft was discovered when museum employees found a window had been smashed at the rear of the east wing.
[Christophe Girard, Deputy Mayor of Paris]:
"This is a grave crime. The mayor of Paris has immediately reacted to say how big this crime was. This is the heritage of humanity as these are important works of major painters such as Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Leger and Modigliani."
Officials are at a loss as to how the sophisticated security systems were breached.
Three night security guards were also unaware of the theft.
Deputy Mayor, Christophe Girard.
[Christophe Girard, Deputy Mayor of Paris]:
"There are what we call patrols, there is a security headquarters, there are three people permanently in the museum who were there. The system has therefore been overcome, evidently, as the three people who were there didn't see anything."
The theft is the latest to hit Paris after thieves stole 32 drawings worth 8 million Euros from the Picasso Museum in June 2009.
