Authorities Investigate Costa Concordia's Black Box

Rescue workers continue their search around the half-submerged Costa Concordia - an Italian cruise ship that capsized Friday.    

          

At least 6 people were killed in the accident, over 60 were injured and 14 others are still missing.   

          

The captain of the 114,000 ton vessel was arrested on Saturday, and has been accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship.   

           

Now, investigators are working through navigation data recordings to establish the precise sequence of events during the disaster, which happened in calm seas and clear weather.              

 

[Filippo Marini, Spokesperson, Port Authority]:

"We are trying to refrain from making assumptions as now we have the possibility to consult the "black boxes" of the ship which were found by coast guard divers, to check and verify the details and to confirm the exact maneuvers of the captain of the ship, Captain Schettino." 

             

Prosecutors accuse the captain of leaving the ship before the evacuation was complete, while coastguard officials say he refused to return to the vessel when asked to.    

          

And passengers say there were unexplained delays in organizing the evacuation.

"There were 'dead moments' with no communication from the moment when the incident occurred, the captain gravely underestimated the gravity of the situation."  

            

On Monday morning, a helicopter plucked rescue workers to safety after the huge cruise ship slipped slightly from its resting place.  

            

Divers combing the vessel for missing passengers said conditions had deteriorated since the weekend.
