Germany-Portugal Pre-Match Celebrations
Fans from Germany and Portugal were out on the streets of Lviv 12 hours ahead of their teams opening match on Saturday (June 9).
Donning colorful hats and wigs, wearing painted faces and waving their national flags, the cheering fans took over the main square of Ukraine's western city, host to the opening Group B match.
There was a party-like atmosphere with supporters from both camps happily posing for photographs and cheering on each other as they declared their respective teams' imminent victory.
[Flavia, Portuguese Fan]:
"Of course we will win, we will win 2-0 tomorrow! Will we? Yes!"
[Sulliva, German Fan]:
"3-1 for Germany is enough. 3-1."
Portuguese and German fans did not show any hostility to each other and discussed each other team's prospect together.
"I think it will be 3-2 for Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo will score first time, second will be Joao Montinho which is a surprise... then the third goal will be Pepe Ojedas. Have a good day. (FAN BEING ASKED: 'NO TROUBLE TONIGHT?') No problem we're friends."
Group B, which also includes Denmark and Netherlands, are considered Euro 2012's strongest group.
Germany, who last won the European Championship in 1996, and Netherlands are among the tournament favorites, but with Cristiano Ronaldo in seemingly unstoppable form for Real Madrid last season, Portugal cannot be discounted.
Lviv, Ukraine's culture capital, has welcomed fans to their normally tranquil city of 750,00.
[Olga Vladimirovna, Lviv Resident]:
"Everything is super. If there is no football, Lviv will be desolate and now there is a bit more life in the city. And everything is normal and good."
The game will start at 2:45 Eastern Standard Time on Saturday.
